The University of Cadiz, a CREAMARE Project Partner, is a public education and research centre primarily focused on marine studies. Founded in 1979, the university hosts more than 1,100 researchers and over 20,000 students annually. The UCA participates in the CREAMARE project with the Nautical and Underwater Archaeology Research Group.
Cañonera shipwreck, Algeciras Bay (Andalusia, Spain) is a small military ship that was used for surveillance, espionage, and guerrilla combat at sea. Its innovative design represented a significant advance in 18th-century naval warfare and influenced the development of modern metal frigates. The University of Cadiz has conducted excavations at this site.
Half of the boat is well-preserved, the projectiles used for the cannon must have weighed 28 pounds, and unique and significant objects from life on board have been found.
