The Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage (Egypt) was established in 2009 as a European Union project under the EU-Tempus III programme. The aim was to create a specialised centre for postgraduate studies and training in maritime and underwater archaeology.
The UCH site is the Lighthouse of Alexandria, Island of Pharos, built between 300 and 280 b.C. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the World and an extraordinary example of Hellenistic technology. This incredible structure remained in use until the 14th century when two earthquakes destroyed it.
The remains lie on a sandy seabed between 6 and 22 metres below sea level, covering an area of 3 hectares. The site contains a treasure trove of blocks, architectural fragments and statues in hard stone such as granite, quartzite, granodiorite, limestone and marble.
Linking creativity, culture and media technologies in the transnational co-production of digital interactive products for the communication of maritime and underwater cultural heritage.
