Centre for Underwater Archaeology is a cultural institution supported by the Ministry of Culture. Its mission? To explore, document and preserve Bulgaria’s rich underwater heritage, from the Black Sea coast to its rivers and lakes.

The cultural artefacts unearthed by the centre find their way to museums along the southern Black Sea coast, showcasing the nation’s maritime heritage.

The UCH site is the Urdoviza shipwreck in Urdoviza Bay, Kiten. This modern shipwreck, dating from the early 19th century, is a testament to Bulgaria’s maritime history. Remarkably, despite the passage of time, much of the ship’s structure, including the main deck, remains intact, buried under the sand at a depth of 9-10 metres.
